First there was the book in which Mateusz Pakuła presented a chronicle of his father's dying, written ex post but in the form of a diary. A thing of poignant sincerity, an intimate confession of love, grief and rage at not being able to shorten the suffering of a dying man.
However, one of Poland's most interesting playwrights and most original directors decided not to close the story and put it to the test of the stage. He spread the narrative over five fantastic actors, and they gave it a new and, for many, unexpected dimension. For laughter, lined with despair, has sneaked into the story, which the author does not spare us even the most drastic details. It acts as a safety valve to make this theatrical and life experience easier to bear.
Uncompromising to the extreme, the play is a cry for the right to euthanasia, a blasphemy against hypocritical Polish society and a church hierarchy that does not hide its best interests. The play has taken part in almost all major Polish theatre festivals, where it is perceived as something more than a normal performance every time. Hence the endless conversations with the artists with the audience long afterwards, a real encounter between them.
Plus many awards, with the Grand Prix of last year's Divine Comedy and the Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art, and a team award for all performers at the Festival of the Art of Acting in Kalisz.
The play was awarded the Grand Prix of the 29th National Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art.
