The Golden Records
Tickets and description:
The story of Carl Sagan, the famous cosmologist and promoter of knowledge about the cosmos. In the 1970s, he was commissioned by NASA. Together with his colleagues, he was to select material for the Golden Records that would fly on the Voyager probes into space - material that would be read by alien civilisations encountering Earth probes on their way. Letter in a bottle. A letter to intelligent beings in space, a biography of humanity and greetings from Earth's inhabitants. History, science, art, music: a collection of the greatest achievements of homo sapiens. A seemingly scientific task, but it turns out that the deliberations were heavily influenced by the members' love relationships. Will it be possible to make the best choices under these conditions?
And no, wait, it's not so beautiful after all. NASA refuses to allow images of naked people to be included on the discs... After all, it's scandalous! It further orders that all images of war and violence.... be cut from human history. After all, aliens might perceive this as a threat! The phones are ringing off the hook, government officials are pressing Sagan and convincing him what should be on the records and what should not. Even fierce battles are being fought over music tracks – writes Mateusz Pakuła, director and author of the script.
The performance features music from the 1970s – mainly hits from around 1976, arranged by Antonis Skolias and Zuzanna Skolias-Pakuła. The set and costumes were designed by Justyna Elminowska, the choreography is by Mikołaj Karczewski. The author of the poster is Jakub Woynarowski.
The play took part in the 17th edition of the Divine Comedy Festival, which was held from 6 to 15 December 2024.
Emose Uhunmwangho won the Acting Award for her performance as Frank. The judges highlighted: ‘unbelievable vocal ability and a sense of comedic vibrancy that takes the performance to an even higher level’.
‘The Golden Records’ took part in the 30th National Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art.
